The Municipal Unit of Aigio extends in an area, where the mountains and the sea harmoniously exist. The coastal city of Aigio and capital of the Municipality of Aigialeia is the second in size city of Achaia. It is amphitheatrically built, with a view of the Corinthian gulf and expands at three levels. The first level is the coastal zone, known as Kato Poli. The second is the region of Agios Andreas, known as Mesi Poli. The third level, Ano Poli, hosts the historical centre and the settlement.
Aigio is connected to Patras and Athens by road and railway networks and is built on a hill, north-east of mount Panachaiko, at a height of 60 metres from the surface of the sea, while geographically it is situated between the rivers Selinountas and Meganitis. Due to its position, the city could be used as a base for outings to close destinations, such as Delfoi, Olympia, Mykines, Nafplio, Kalavryta, as well as the Ionian islands.
In the past at the heyday of the raisin trade, Aigio was a flourishing hub of economic and cultural development that defined the identity of the broader district and one of the strongest cities on the country’s economic map. Today though the main economical activity of the area is agriculture, whereas the port of the city isn’t used for passengers or tourism. Even though there are many advantages of the region in this sector, the commercial activity of the port is low, it has however growth prospects. On the other hand, holiday tourism is the main form of tourist activity in the district, something which is due to its large coastline, and also to its attractions.
Specifically, the traveller has the opportunity to visit the Church of Virgin Mary, which is found above the old port, while at the same spot the Technological Educational Institute of Aigio is located. Following the same path the visitor will come across the reconstructed coastal zone of Aigio with the traditional stone buildings, which once were warehouses for raisins, while a crucial point at the new beach of the municipality, which is at last ideal for enjoyable bicycle rides, is the ”Plane Tree of Pausanias” and the twelve fountains.
Ascending the steps of ”Filopimenos Street”, you will end up very close to the shopping area of the city and the Archaeological Museum of Aigio, an architectural decoration, which along with the imposing Church of Faneromeni make up projects of the German architect Ernst Ziller with intense historical meaning.
In the centre of Aigio the visitor has the ability to see the Cultural Centre ”Alekos Megaris” with the outdoor theatre ”George Pappas”, as well as the ”Panagiotopoulos mansion”, which hosts various drawing and religious art exhibitions. Moreover, nobody should neglect to visit the Municipal Historical and Folklore Museum, the Ecclesiastical Museum, the Local Library and the square of Psila Alonia with the Tower. At the same time, Aigio has a Public Stadium and an Indoor Gym, a short distance away from the historical centre of the city, where we meet the Square of Agia Lavra and the Town Hall.
In the mountainous areas we mainly find regions which produce raisins, such as Kounina, Dafnes and Paraskevi, but also popular winter destinations, such as Pyrgaki and Pteri. It is also worthwhile visiting the Holy Monastry of Taxiarches, which has a reputation for its history, but also for the production of rose petal jam, as well as the Folklore Museum of Kouloura, in which we can admire objects and costumes with cultural significance. In addition, there are the villages Koumari and Hatzi, whereas the villages Melissia, Mavriki, Selinountas and Axladias are picturesque villages with traditional squares, rich in vineyards and raisins.
Finally, at the coastal zone you will find the beach of Alyki, which is situated very close to Aigio, as it is only 2km away from the centre of the city, but also the quite large beaches of Digeliotika, Temeni and Valimitika. Boasting a rich history and a strong contemporary presence, Aigio deserves our undivided attention making it a must-see city, which stands shoulder to shoulder with more widely known destinations.
