In this wetland, nature is the protagonist and man is merely the servant of nature’s other living creatures and plants. It is home to many species of the animal kingdom, which preserve a remarkable equilibrium, together with the vegetation. They are the protagonists in the miracle of life, confirming the wonder of creation. They are tiny fighters, who set the example to remind us the greatest of all lessons: when nature is respected, it provides for everyone. No wonder they enjoy the respect of the area and its residents, who continuously ensure it is well taken care of.
The small lagoon of Alyki in Aegio is located 2 km east of the town, at cape Gyftissa. It is an enormous “nest” for rate birds and a wonderful host for bird watchers.
It stretches over 180 km, with its perimeter measuring 3.2 km, while its depth is not but 50 cm. Besides, in winter it is also supplied with rainwater. It is also a protected area, included in the Natura-2000 network.
The wetland, although small, is of great ornithological significance, especially as a stopover habitat for migratory birds. Swans and flamingos, among others. Many of the observed species are listed as threatened in Greece. Moreover, there are also 9 different species of amphibians, reptiles and mammals. These include a rare species of fox (Vulpe V. Hellenica), a species of hedgehog (Evinaceous concolor), a species of frog (Rana ridibunda) and the marten Martes foina.
This large diversity of fauna make the Alyki wetland a special area, not for research purposes but also for recreation. Bird watching is particularly popular and easy here, especially in winter. The ideal time to visit the wetland is at sunset. It is the time when you will enjoy a crescendo of colours, where the waters welcome the diving sun.
