Since 1901 to date, the 172 “stairs” connect the Lower Town with the Upper Town, starting from the beach at the height of the railway.
Impressively wide, measuring as much as a road, they pay a tribute -both by their size and the name – to the general who strengthened this Achaean town.
Philopoemen was a charismatic leader who, at his time of rule, managed to include Sparta in the league and temporarily united the entire Peloponnese, after restructuring the army of Achaia, transforming it to a powerful force.
