Holy Church of the Assumption of the Virgin
The Holy Church of the Assumption of the Virgin or Panagia of Vergouvitsa is located in the village of Monastiri in the municipality of Aigialeia, at an altitude of 627 meters. At the entrance of the village there is a shrine built in 1878, 6 meters high in which a large icon of the Virgin Mary was placed. From there begins a stone path about 300 meters long with two parallel rows of large cypress trees and ends at the church square.
The church is Byzantine style and on the threshold of its door is the marble slab under which the historical icon of the Virgin Mary was found.
Inside the temple there are two rows of murals and many icons. The iconostasis is handmade wood and gilded with real gold dust.
The church was built in 1848 and was illustrated by two Mount Athos painters in 1880. The high bell tower of the church was built in 1891 and is a continuation of the wall that encloses the area where the church is located.
