Municipal Art Gallery of Akrata
The Municipal Art Gallery of Akrata is the only Art Gallery of the Municipality of Aegialia and the spiritual “offspring” and life-time project of Zoe Psarrou. A woman devoted to the highest form of expression, painting, to Art and to her hometown. In her effort to create a cultural hub, Zoe Psarrou not only donated 55 artworks by great Greek artists from her personal collection, but also inspired fellow citizens to make similar gestures, donating many paintings by old and more recent artists.
In addition to her permanent collection, the new cultural centre showcases the works of new artists and is a venue for interesting artistic events. It therefore attracts art lovers to her beautiful mansion, while supporting local cultural life. Psarrou is noted for her profound, substantial presence. Her exhibitions usually focus on Greek artists.
The neoclassical building of Eleftherias square also stands out, thanks to the artistic decor on the wall of the Kanellopoulou pedestrian area. The entire history of the wider area comes alive on the formerly lifeless bricks, through a highly inspired mural that brightens up the wall. The depicted themes include Tassos and Golfo from pastoral tradition, the mythical Styx waters, mountain Helmos, the river Krathis as well as erstwhile ladies.
Art lovers travelling to Western Peloponnese now have yet another reason to make a stop at Akrata.
