The most beautiful reason to visit the mountains has a name and is called Zarouchla.
The picturesque village, on the south-east slopes of Aroanian mountains, is built at an altitude of 1,100 metres, guarded by plane trees, pine trees and firs. The landscape is complemented by the river Krathis, which flows from Helmos and crosses the village. The central, paved road is the heart of the village’s social life. It is where you will find tavernas and cafés, as well as local product shops. The area is a model of tourist development, fully organised and ready to welcome visitors with nice, traditional accommodation, stone-built homes and cosy guest-houses.
Its stone-built mansions are true gems, with the tower-houses or war-towers standing out. Most of them date back to 300 years ago. Some are well-preserved, while others are mercilessly wounded by time.
The two towers – of Fotilas and Charalambis – that are preserved in the village also confirm the glorious past of the place, since the residents of Zarouchla played a key role in the 1821 Revolution. The building of Fotilas, which is also the oldest – at least 500 years old – is currently better known as the Tower of Zarouchla. This is because, the former base of the Chieftain of the Revolution is now used as a guest house. The village also features Byzantine churches and churches with Byzantine frescoes. The two churches near the village, one of the 12th and one of the 13th century, document the existence of the village during the Frankish rule.
Zarouchla stands out for the warm hospitality of its residents, who will welcome you and tell you stories of the glorious past of the area and the secrets of the village.
