Plane tree Platanos of Pafsania
The prominent plane tree in Aegio’s beach is also known as Pausanias’ plane, as it was mentioned by the ancient traveller. This more than a century old tree is one of the oldest in the country, inspiring endless admiration.
With experts calculating its age at least 600 years, it has rightfully been designated a natural monument since 1976.
In its vast hollow part, a plaque refers to Pausanias and the 2nd century BC. However, this reference is not related to the Plane itself, but to the adjacent 12 water fountains.
Historic sources also report that during the Greek Revolution it was used to hold prisoners, having a door on the opening side.
This magnificent tree has a circumference of 12 metres and its green foliage used to span over 50 metres. Its cool embrace may not be as large nowadays, but it has lost none of its allure.
It has been standing a silent witness for 600 years, closely linked to the local history of Aegio, recording the romances, struggles, efforts, losses, joys and anxieties of its homeland. The ancient guard still graces the beach with its presence, reminding us that there is always someone who knows even the most forsaken stories…
